Standalone AppV deployments with AdminStudio

Postby rkvsk » Thu Jul 15, 2010 4:01 pm

Hi,
We are using adminstudio's Windows installer converter to convert MSI files into Virtual applications format (Follow this link:http://kb.flexerasoftware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=adminstudio901-Content-ashelplibrary-ISRSingleApphtm7&sliceId=&docTypeID=DT_MACROVISIONHELPNET_1_1&dialogID=91322747&stateId=0 0 91320360). Interestingly, the output files from this procedure doesnt provide MSI Utility/MSI wrapper file, which is used in Standalone deployment scenarios.
Now, my question is:
Is there any other procedure to deploy App-V virtual applications with out the MSI Utility/MSI Wrapper file? (My adminstudio is producing SFT, OSD, XML and ICO files, but no MSI Utility/MSI wrapper file is present in the output)

Requesting help from people who have worked on standalone mode deployment scenarios.
Thanks,
rkvsk

You can import packages to a client with the SFTMIME command. See information on this command here:

How to Add a Package by Using the Command Line: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/libr ... 17181.aspx
SFTMIME Command Reference: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/libr ... 17090.aspx

Thanks AParker!
I have got this working, but only if my app-v files along with my manifest file is copied to the local machine.
I have one question in continuation to this:
I have run this SFTMIME command with my manifest file at a network share location. but it failed with "Handle is invalid" error.
As per my requirement, i would need this working with out copying the app-v files to my local machine. Here is what i am looking for:
1. I will have my app-v files in shared location.
2. I will install app-v client (Standalone mode) on my client machine.
3. I will run the SFTMIME command on the Manifest file located in the share from the local machine, via a batch files.
4. I will have my virtual application shortcuts published on my client machine.

How can i make this working? I believe if i have the MSI utility/wrapper file, i can just launch that MSI file to have the shortcuts showing up on my machine, with out copying the App-v files onto my local machine.
Thanks for your help...

rkvsk,

You are likely geting that "Handle is invalid" message exactly because you are trying to import from network share, into which App-V Client processes (i.e. service running on the system) triggered by sftmime/sfttray command do not have access to. MSI wrapper actually extracts those package files (except SFT of course) to your local machine because of this so unfortunately you'll need to have source files locally before importing..

btw, I don't know if you have looked into it yet, but since the subject of generating wrapper MSI came up I invite to look at my AVE Professional (link in the signature) which will generate anew MSI if one is not found when re-saving the package.

Thanks Ksaunam..
That info helped.
I am looking for some thing like MSI utility for Microsoft virtualization. I have found it here (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en). When launched, it looks for SPRJ file. But, my adminstudio, doesnt provide me an SPRJ file as its output. All it gives is SFT, OSD, Manifest and ICO files. Have anyone here used for adminstudio for standalone app-v files generation?
I understood that AVE can do it, but i see an associated cost with it. Is there any tool like the MSI utility for Microsoft virtualization, which is a free ware and do only this job for me?

Thanks to Appvirtgurus out there!

Because sftmime can be difficult to figure out, I created some free binary tools that interface with it. AppV_DeployNPublish will allow you to deploy to the stand-alone client without the virtual MSI wrapper or SPRJ. This may or may not be what you need. Find it at the tools section at tmurgent.com

Thanks Tim..
What i was looking for was exactly what your tool "Appdeploy_DeployApp" tries to do. But i have some problems, and would need your favour a little more so as to close this....
What i did:
I have installed AppV client for standalone mode, following the commandline instructions you have in the white paper on tmurgent.com. Then i launch Appdeploy_deployapp, browse to the manifest file from my adminstudio. But, i have this error "One of the parameters specified on the command line is not recognized. Check the command, and then try again.Error code: 45242F4-05A02501-00034020". Do i need to run appdeploy_deployapp from the command line and give some parameters while i try to run it?

Is there anyone who has worked with AdminStudio to get App-V output files and used them to deploy via standalone mode? Is there anything wrong with these files?

When i launch the application using "App-V launcher" file provided by adminstudio. I have this working, but that is not i am looking for. :(

Thanks,
rkvsk
