Get MSI Piece right

Postby JJ » Fri Feb 26, 2010 1:25 am

From the App-V 4.6 release notes

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee958115.aspx

Load/install error running a Windows Installer file generated by the App-V 4.5 Sequencer
Running a Windows Installer file generated by the App-V 4.5 Sequencer produces a load/install error when trying to run it on an App-V 4.6 client. You will see the following message: "This package requires Microsoft Application Virtualization Client 4.5 or later". Please use the following workaround.

WORKAROUND Open the old package with either the App-V 4.5 SP1 Sequencer or the App-V 4.6 Sequencer and generate a new .msi file for the package.

Has anyone ever noticed that Microsoft can never seem to keep things straight with the MSI feature.

MSI's created using the 1.0 utility for 4.1/4.1 were useless with 4.5.

And now it seems MSI's created using the 4.5 Sequencer have been rendered useless in 4.6

Anyone else feel that this is an issue?

Actuall it really is a pitty that MS can't manage "old pieces of software running in a new environment" for its own (yeah, writing thasentence I was refering to Applications/OS issues).

However, it sounds more terrible then it actually is: You can use packages that have been created with the App-V 4.5 CU1 Sequencer with the 6.4 Client - and 4.5 CU1 was released almost one year ago.

And using the script posted at http://blogs.technet.com/appv/archive/2010/02/25/how-to-use-pre-4-6-msi-packages-with-the-app-v-4-6-client.aspx makes updating the MSI quite easy.

And I think, upgrading the MSIs probably is the easiest part - because I think that you'd have to test each application with the new client anyway...
