Sequecing will distrupt the installation

Postby olekristian » Tue Jan 12, 2010 1:32 pm

Hi guys.
Have any of you experienced that an application will not successfully install if you are sequencing the application, but will install ok if you do not sequence?
We have that problem from time to time with Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009 client.

Yes, this happens sometimes (although very rarely).

Can you post exact symptoms you are getting when it fails (error messages etc.)?

Hi Kalle.

Had problems with Microsoft Dynamics Ax2009.. tried alot of different approaches (different versions, iso file and local copy ++), but the only times it went well was when I did not sequence.
I did an upgrade to appV 4.6 (4.6.0.1401) today and it helped :)

Might have been fo fast to jump up and down.

After importing the package to the management server and trying to cache it to a client I got the following error:
07708004-0000000E

Newer client required.

And its not an options to roll out 4.6 in our production yet.
So back to the drawing board: trying an older version of 4.5

Yes, that's correct. 4.6 packages are not supported in 4.5 ;-)

As a workaround for this, may I suggest you try to convert your 4.6 package to 4.5 format (or 4.0 format, as 4.6 package is currently identified as 4.5 format) with my SFT Encoder (http://www.gridmetric.com/products/sftencoder.html) . You can download trial version and try it with that to see if it's possible to make package run in 4.5 client.

Hey Kalle, that's a great idea!

If it doesn't work, it would probably be due to differences in how .net is handled in the two versions, but surely it is worth a try.

Thanks again for feedback.

The convertion was a great tip! But after downloading and converting the package I got the following error trying to import the application:
Unable to import OSD file. The file specified is not a valid SoftGrid OSD file. Please ensure the file conforms to the SoftGrid OSD file schema and contains well formed XML. Error code: 0000C81D
So the package would not be imported.

I open the package with a 4.5 client, started sequecing and shutdown without doing any changes.
Then I could import the package without any errors :)

Now I get the following message in the sftlog:
[01/14/2010 10:31:30:902 OSDF ERR] {tid=53C:usr=**USERNAME***}
The Application Virtualization Client could not parse the OSD file 'M:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Application Virtualization Client\Temp\3b459ce4-080f-4ae9-b38b-3f5df2923b84.osd'. Reason: Newer client required (rc 07708004-0000000E)

[01/14/2010 10:31:30:902 AMGR INF] {tid=53C:usr=**USERNAME***}
The app manager could not create an application from '\\sgvastest01\content$\Microsoft\**PACKAGE NAME**\**PACKAGE NAME** 5.0.1000.52.osd' (rc 07708044-0000000E).

When I check the temp-area I cant find any osd-files.. -> ?

Update: downgrading appV helped.

We are currently running 4.5.2.17140, but when I tried setting up a new sequencer with 4.5.0.1485 it seems there is no problem.

olekristian,

Glad it worked out in the end, I think that those error messages were due to some entries in 4.6 generated OSD that got left in OSD when downconvert was finished and 4.5 Mgmt Console wasn't able to parse it. Sequencer is likely more lenient to these extra entires/attributes/values. I have to take look at this and test some downconverts from 4.6 packages..

Newer client required -message comes, by my understanding, from DEPENDENCY/CLIENT VERSION in OSD and since 4.6 sets it to 4.6.0.0 it was most likely not modified to 4.5.0.0 or such. You could have done this manually if you had knew it. It's interesting tho, if Sequencer did not change it when re-saving the package!
