Altiris Software Virtualization Solution

Postby sebastian » Thu Jan 05, 2006 5:03 pm

Another player is entering the virtualization arena. Altiris with theire new Altiris Software Virtualization Solution, and it looks damn good too me + the list price is at a level, so everybody can get on the boat. :)

I'm planning on testing this as soon as possible because it promises to fix most of my issues with softgrid.

After looking at all the pdf files and watching a web cast I have mixed feelings.

I think that the whole service support, access to files, and healing and native speed and so on is great, but it's not a complete solution like softgrid, but I'll keep an eye on it, because I think it will mature to be as great a product as softgrid and prehaps better even though they do things differently than softgrid.

I've beta tested for a while now, and the soulution is not as complete as softgrid, but the engine is far better. I've seen no application respons delay or startup delay at all. It works with services and printers/drivers.

If and when Altiris get the whole server side taken care of it's bye bye softgrid, unless softricity release a briliant release within the next couple of months.

Hi,

Disadvantage of the Altiris solution is that it would propably be part of the Deployment Suite of Altiris.
I know really alot people who don't want/need that complete suite.
Other disadvantage is that it doen't work in a server (TS) environment and it's still Beta. SFT is doing a good job some years.

Advantage of Altiris is price!....

SoftGrid 4.0 should do some goods (needed!) thinks!.
I can't tell more about that!. just wait ...

Altiris is nice but dont work with ROAMING Profiles
I hope it this feature comes in the next VERSION. The Sequenzing with Altiris works fine but no STEAMING Feature.

It looks like they are working with Ardence to try and fill out the product to support streaming and some roaming profile functionality.

Heh you should see the comments on the original article on the Altiris site. That article while probably true is probably the worst light you could put on Softgrid. In my practicle expierience I find Softgrid packaging easier and faster than MSI and not the nightmare in the article. I did find a not so biased comparason.

Also it looks like Brian Madden is covering Softgrid as a topic.
